Teacher. Poet. Painter.

There's an Isaac Asimov quote that fits me like an old pair of jeans. "I write for the same reason I breathe --because if I didn't, I would die" (Lucretia Aleron).  Lucretia, I have those same jeans (and genes!). I write because I love words, and in the beginning was the Word. As I used to tell my English students: everything began not with a number, nor an amoeba, nor with a star. Everything began with a word. The Word. Just as The Word created a universe with infinite possibilities, we with our words can invent worlds with infinite possibilities. Writing takes us on never-ending adventures, new ways to see old things.

I paint because of my students.  It was possibly the greatest gift they’ve ever given me, outside of themselves, and their minds – but this gift will last longer.  I am so delighted, at this later stage of my life, to discover a passion for something that will outlive me.  I will never learn all there is to learn about painting before I leave this earth. What a challenge!  What a joy--learning something new forever!

Welcome to my website, friend.  I hope you find something that delights and challenges you.  And something that gives you joy.

The broccoli hills heave,
their green sheaves hover and hug
the air, cocoon the skin
warm, soft, mouth to mouth
cheek to cheek, like a midnight dance.
